A Statement of Origin, Authenticity & Professional Standards
Over the years, we have watched the concept of 16-season color analysis spread around the world. Today, many professionals and organizations refer to 16 seasons, and some have developed their own interpretations and methodologies around that number.
As the creator of the Universal 4X4 Color System® – 16 Seasons®, I believe the time has come to provide some clarity—not to criticize anyone else’s work, but to protect and document the history, methodology and intellectual property that I have spent decades developing.
My journey with color began with the traditional four seasons. After studying color professionally and working with real people from many different backgrounds, I began recognizing something that the systems available to me did not completely address. Within each of the four seasonal families, I saw four distinct expressions of color.
That research became the foundation of the Universal 4X4 Color System® – 16 Seasons®, organized through the four color expressions of Pure, Tinted, Toned, and Shaded within Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter.

This work has been publicly documented by ByFERIAL for many years. Our published material describing the 4X4 Color Analysis – 16 Seasons and its Pure, Tinted, Toned and Shaded structure dates back at least to 2012. The name THE UNIVERSAL 4X4 COLOR SYSTEM (16 SEASONS) is also a federally registered U.S. trademark owned by ByFERIAL LLC.
Today, we recognize that other professionals may use 16 seasons, 4X4, four groups of four, or their own adaptations of seasonal color analysis. We recognize and respect that these may be different methodologies and interpretations. What is important is that they are distinguished from the official ByFERIAL Universal 4X4 Color System® – 16 Seasons®.
The official ByFERIAL methodology is taught through ByFERIAL and its authorized professionals. Completing official ByFERIAL training ensures that the System is understood and applied as it was developed and intended.
I believe there is room in our industry for different methodologies, ideas and approaches. My only wish is that we honor one another’s work by representing the origin, name, methodology, educational materials and intellectual property behind each system accurately.
For clients, students and professionals who want to know whether they are experiencing the authentic ByFERIAL methodology, the distinction is simple:
Look for ByFERIAL. Look for official training. Look for an authorized ByFERIAL professional. And look for the 4X4 logo—a symbol of the System, its history and the standards we proudly stand behind. Because 16 seasons may now be discussed around the world, the Universal 4X4 Color System® – 16 Seasons® has its own documented history, structure, methodology and origin.
We know where it began. We documented it. We developed it. And we will continue to teach it, protect it and evolve it with integrity.
