The Importance of Nonverbal Communication

Communication takes many different forms. Whether it is verbal, written, or nonverbal, communication can convey a variety of ideas, messages, and feelings. Of all the different forms of communication, perhaps nonverbal is the most common and the most powerful. Nonverbal communication can easily convey any message or emotion.

Information on Nonverbal Communication

Non-vocal communication uses gestures and expressions to communicate. For example, if someone wishes to convey authority in a room, they can stand while others are sitting. If sitting, a person could put their elbows on the table and form a church steeple with their fingers together. These actions subtlety show authority, power, and help to control the room.

Another use for nonverbal communication is to show confidence, honesty and success. This is done by standing up straight, with an open and inviting posture, instead of arms crossed and slouching. Also, walking quickly and with your head up will demonstrate confidence and success. These are helpful tips to keep in mind on your next interview or business meeting.

Keeping eye contact and emoting with your eye brows is a great way to show that you are interested and alert when listening. The person speaking will realize that you are paying attention and will therefore be more engaged when it is your turn to talk. Also, nodding your head in agreement or disagreement can easily show someone what your thoughts are without interrupting their talking.

In order to appear as someone who is friendly and welcoming, a simple wave is the best way to get the message across. Also, an open posture with good eye contact, a smile, and open palms is a universal way to show warmth and friendliness. These tips can be used in social settings, such as dinner parties and group gatherings.

A posture similar to Rodin?s Thinker, with the chin on the hand, is a very common way to show interest, focus, and thoughtfulness. This is a nonverbal gesture that can be used in meetings, discussions, even in the classroom. People will easily identify that you are focused and interested.

Nonverbal communication is used multiple times a day. Most folks don?t take the time to really use this form of communication to their advantage. Simply by being aware of the setting, the people around you, and the message you want to send, you can use nonverbal signals to control the environment.
