How To Select The Perfect Tie

Whether a recent college graduate launching their career or a veteran CEO looking for that new first impression, picking the perfect tie can be a daunting task. While ultimately a matter of personal taste, there are certain factors one must account when selecting a tie. This starts with asking a few basic question.

What suits and shirts will the tie complement? Is this tie for a special occasion, such as a wedding or funeral or meant is it for an office setting? Will the tie be coordinated with a pocket square? Once these questioned are answered, then selecting the perfect tie becomes a matter of dimensions, color and quality.

The average tie is between 53 to 58 inches long. When properly tied, it should touch the belt buckle. Slimmer ties, approximately 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 inches at the widest points, are in fashion. More traditionally cut ties are between 3 to 3 3/4 inches wide. The perfect tie should look proportional to the wearer’s chest.

In regards to color, this is dependent on your personal colouring and the effect of the wearer is going for. As a general rule, a red tie contrasts extremely well with a light coloured shirt. Semi-solid and light patterned shirts go well with blue or green ties. Light blue, whites, off whites and pastel coloured shirts are the easiest to match. When selecting a tie with a pattern, pairing it with a solid shirt is the safest bet.

Once the tie is matched to the shirt, it is prudent to wear a grey or navy blue suit. A patterned, colourful tie draws attention. A solid black or grey tie is best for a subdued look. Light coloured suits should be paired with darker ties as well.

The quality of the tie is dependent on how much the buyer wants to invest. Satin ties are the most prevalent and affordable. However the most superior and the best of all time is the Silk tie. A knit wool tie, though uncommon, is best for giving a texture variety to an outfit.

Along with a tie, a pocket square is an excellent accessory for a suit. A common misconception, thanks to department stores, is to match the tie with the pocket square. Nevertheless, it is better to find a complementing pocket square that is a shade lighter or darker than the main color in the tie.
