ROYGBIV is the Color of the Month for June

ByFerial 4x4 Colors of the Month

Rainbows are produced when sunlight strikes raindrops at a precise angle. These colorful phenomena have a rich history spanning continents and cultures. For many, they positively represent inclusivity, diversity, and good fortune.

Did you know the colors on a primary rainbow are always in order of their wavelength? From longest to shortest: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Rainbows reflect unique moments and communities, hence why the rainbow flag is an important Pride symbol.

And, since there’s no official color for Father’s Day, the rainbow is a wonderful celebratory symbol, as it offers multiple hues to celebrate those who fulfill a fatherly role in our lives.

The History of the Rainbow Pride Flag

The rainbow flag symbolizes the LGBTQIA+ community’s unity and commitment to inclusivity and diversity. It first came into use in 1978 when artist Gilbert Baker designed it for the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade.

“Your true colors are beautiful like a rainbow.” — Cyndi Lauper

Over the years, the flag has been simplified to the standard six-color version used today. The colors represent

  • life (red)
  • healing (orange)
  • sunlight (yellow)
  • nature (green)
  •  harmony (blue)
  • spirit (purple)

They also reflect the spectrum of human sexuality and gender. Displaying a Pride flag is one way to support the LGBTQIA+ community. It shows you’re open to accepting everyone regardless of gender or sexual orientation.

The Origins of Father’s Day

On Father’s Day, children show their appreciation to their dads by sending cards, giving gifts, and expressing words of encouragement. Although it was not made an official holiday in the United States until 1972, when President Richard Nixon signed it into law, it has become a universally cherished celebration.

Giving roses is a tradition in some cultures for Father’s Day. However, everyone has their way of celebrating this special day. Some choose to give cards to their fathers, pick gifts, go fishing and/or gardening, or dine out with them, while some prefer to devote their entire day to their fathers and spend some quality time with them.
