Professional Dress Code

Professional Dress Code

In today’s business and professional world, image means everything. Gone are the days where one can simply wear an oversized suit with ugly squared-toed shoes. People judge each other based on how they are dressed. Clothes ought to fit properly. Beyond that though, the type of clothing, including color, helps demonstrate a certain mood or image. The way one looks is judged before the character of the person.

A professional dress code is just that: a dress code. However, that does not mean one cannot still exude a certain image in a dress code. Even the strictest of professional dress codes allow for enough room for creativity.

The Powerful Look

To look powerful, one should wear dark colors with some contrast. A common example of this is a black suit with a white shirt. However, in the professional world, a black suit is often not appropriate; it gives off images of incredibly sober events such as funerals. Instead, elect for a charcoal or dark grey suit. Even in the professional world, a suit is not always necessary. If so, one may choose to forgo a suit and wear a dark pair of pants, some form of sweater, and a white shirt. Avoid black shirts and white ties. Both items tend to look strange and generally not professional. Shoes should generally always be black.

The Professional Look

Looking powerful can be intimidating. Instead, choose softer colors. Monochrome looks are not always necessary. Generally, suits should be navy or a medium to lighter grey. Pinstripes may be worn if desired. With this look, shoes may be dark brown or black. A white shirt is still probably best. Create pops of color with socks that have contrasting designs, ties, or even pocket squares. Just remember to not match the pocket square with the tie exactly. Avoid solid blocks of bright color.

The Sophisticated Look

This look is certainly the most casual of the three. This style relies on wearing mainly dark colors with pops of color. Accessories are appropriate here. Currently, bracelets are on trend and are generally acceptable with professional dress codes. While suits or major articles of clothes should still be dark, accessorizing pieces such as the tie may be brighter and more playful looking. Well fitting clothes are incredibly important as it separates a sophisticated look from a juvenile one.?
